Traditional Use and Safety of Herbal Medicine

The uses of traditional herbal medicine have a very long historical background that corresponds to the Stone Age. In this world, the practice of traditional healing and magic is much older than some of the other traditional medical sciences and seems to be much more prevalent compared to conventional medicine. About 150 years ago, natural herbs were the main medication for treating human diseases. It has been estimated that 30% of modern medicines are made from plants first used traditionally, such as aspirin, artemisinin, ephedrine, and digoxin. With the wide application of chemical drugs, herbal medicine and other traditional therapies have shown good contraction. The results of Western medicine treatment are not satisfactory and problems of the adverse drug reaction are also very prominent. The reciprocal and alternative treatment, mostly the herbal medicine, has gained more recognition and has also become in demand.
